Man injured in Tennessee gas station explosion

A white 2008 Lincoln MKZ crashed into a gas pump on July 4, causing an explosion and leaving one male pedestrian burned. The victim remains in critical condition after the car accident but is stable. According to the local police department, the vehicle crossed the road and headed into oncoming traffic before driving off the road and into the gas station lot.

Local fire department representatives say that the pedestrian had left a nearby restaurant and made a purchase at the gas station before walking through the parking lot. The driver’s car headed toward the man – who ran to avoid being hit – and struck the gas pump, which burst into flames. The pedestrian was able to get away from the car but was caught in the fire. The victim suffered third degree burns on 40 percent of his body and was transported by ambulance to a local hospital. Weather conditions prevented him from being air transported to a burn unit until a later time.

According to fire department records, the gas station fire was put out within six minutes of receiving the alarm. Officials report that the station’s automatic gas shut off worked properly, which helped control the fire. The vehicle that crashed and started the fire was destroyed as was another nearby vehicle, which belonged to the gas station owner.

Unfortunately, car accidents involving innocent pedestrians cannot be completely prevented. For such situations, victims or family members may benefit from the advice of a personal injury attorney who deals in Tennessee law as it pertains to motor vehicle accidents and compensation. A lawyer of this type may be able to determine if a victim can file a lawsuit and the amount of monetary damages that may be sought.

Safety reduces summertime motorcycle accidents

The increased amount of motorcyclists on the road during the summertime leads to the increase of motorcycle injuries. Unfortunately, failure to observe safety and share the road properly increases the likelihood of motorcycle accidents. Tennessee is no exception as far as the correlation between lack of safety and increased amount of accidents are concerned.

Many motorists claim that they do not see motorcycles; however, a number of motorists rely only on their mirrors and may fail to turn around to look in order to cover their blind spots. A motorcyclist’s best defense can be everyone else’s worst annoyance such as the sound of the engine revving, alerting other motorists’ attention of their presence.

However, not all motorcycle crashes are caused by people driving cars who claim they cannot see them. Many bike accidents are caused by speeding, driving while intoxicated, and carelessness on the road. Many motorcyclists weave in and out of traffic and, in a similar manner to automobiles, may not follow traffic laws closely. Therefore, in order to create a better environment for motorcycles and cars, all operators of such vehicles must make every effort to share the road with respect to everyone’s safety.

Motorcyclists often sustain more serious injuries than those who drive cars because they are less protected. With many more people on the road today, including motorcycles, there is greater risk for accidents involving critical wounds or even death. Tennessee residents who have been injured in motorcycle accidents might benefit by consulting with an experienced personal injury attorney. Those with serious injuries may be eligible to receive compensation, particularly if they are losing income. Likewise, those who lost loved ones because of motorcycle accidents might be able to collect damages as well.

New DUI bill in Tennessee becomes law on July 1st

The state of Tennessee is enacting a new law on July 1st that will require everyone convicted of a DUI with a blood alcohol concentration level of .08 or higher to have to have ignition interlock devices installed in the vehicles to continue driving. According to Mothers Against Drunk Drivers, the new law is a measure taken in an attempt to prevent future drunk driving offenses by those already convicted.

According to MADD, the new law will also require vehicles to have cameras in them that will snap a picture every time the breathalyzer is activated. This measure is taken to discourage others from blowing into the breathalyzer for a drunk driver. MADD hopes that this new law will help prevent another automobile accident due to drunk driving.

However, the prosecuting DUI attorney for Tennessee’s 10th Judicial District stated that the law is only as effective as enforcement and penalty of breaking it. Currently, drunk driving convictions in Tennessee are Class A misdemeanors that carry maximum fines of $2,500 and maximum jail sentences of 11 months and 29 days.

MADD hopes that the new law will help reduce the number of people injured in or killed in drunk driving accidents. People who are injured in car accidents because of a drunk driving might decide to file personal injury lawsuits against the drunk drivers. Likewise, family members of people who were killed in drunk driving accidents might decide to file wrongful death lawsuits against the drunk drivers. Personal injury lawyers might be able to assist people in filing these types of claims.

Semi truck hits state trooper

The morning of June 23, a Tennessee state trooper stopped to assist with a vehicle fire on I-75 in Campbell County. The officer’s vehicle was legally parked on the shoulder of the interstate and the warning lights of the vehicle had been engaged. While the officer was still in his patrol vehicle, his car was struck by a tractor trailer.

The trooper was taken to UT Medical Center with a fractured rib, fractured vertebrae in his neck and unspecified injuries to his arm. He was treated and released. The driver of the semi truck also hit a tow truck that was on the scene providing assistance. The semi truck did not stop at the scene of the truck accident. The driver was arrested by deputies with the Sheriff’s Department further down the road at a service station.

The driver is now facing several criminal charges, including reckless endangerment, fleeing the scene of an accident and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. He was subsequently taken to Campbell County Jail. Police stated that they would continue to investigate the accident.

Regardless of the outcome of the criminal case, any driver who injures another through careless driving may be liable for damages that are caused. Any person who is found to have been driving under the influence will be conclusively presumed not to have been driving carefully. In this scenario, a personal injury attorney may be able to help injured parties recover for their medical bills, any lost wages, and pain and suffering. An attorney may be able to help take over negotiations to ensure that accident victims receive a fair settlement. In some cases, an attorney may also be able to take the case to trial to obtain a verdict.

Cumberland soccer coach killed in car accident

An assistant woman’s soccer coach has been reportedly killed in a crash on Interstate 24 that involved three vehicles. The 28-year-old man worked for a Tennessee university prior to his death but was in Nashville at the time of the accident.

The police stated that the Cumberland University coach was on the interstate heading west when he collided with the back of a pickup truck from behind. His car was turned sideways during the automobile accident and stopped inside of a lane of traffic. After the coach’s vehicle stopped, a tractor trailer struck it on the driver’s side. The 20-year-old driver of the pickup truck sustained only minor injuries. The tractor trailer was being driven by a 58-year-old man who also did not sustain any injuries during the accident.

According to the reports, the assistant soccer coach died at the scene of the crash. The police stated that there was a disabled vehicle on the roadway at the time of the accident. The police believe that the disabled vehicle may have contributed to the accident.

The family of the soccer coach could potentially file charges against the person responsible for the disabled vehicle. This could be done with the aid of a motor vehicle accident attorney. However, the police have not yet determined whether the disabled vehicle actually contributed to the crash or not. The investigation will determine the cause of the accident and whether negligence or recklessness may have played any part. Depending on who is found to be at fault for the accident, compensation may be a plausible outcome for the victim or victims’ families.

Tractor trailer involved in fatal multi-vehicle crash

An accident near Murfreesboro that involved several vehicles, including two semi trucks, and claimed two lives occurred at approximately 12:15 a.m. on June 13. Drivers on the stretch of Interstate 24 in Rutherford County were reportedly moving at a slower than usual speed when the complex crash occurred as there had been a previous accident. According to the Tennessee Highway Patrol, the truck accident occurred when the driver of one of the tractor trailers overturned as he tried to stop in time to avoid the slower vehicles.

The out-of-control truck then careened into about eight other vehicles, two of which immediately caught on fire. The driver and a passenger in one car were both killed, and sheriff’s deputies were able to pull two other people to safety. According to authorities, the two young people who died were en route to the Bonnaroo music festival.

There were five people injured in the fiery crash altogether, and the driver of the semi was uninjured as were six other people involved in the pileup. Police cited the semi driver for failure to exercise due care, and other charges are reportedly pending against him. Part of Interstate 24 remained closed during the morning rush hour while the scene was cleared.

The fact that this truck driver was cited could possibly mean that he was driving at either too high a rate of speed for the conditions or that he was distracted while driving, and he may face criminal charges due to the fatalities. An accident involving so many vehicles, including two large trucks, will need close examination as to cause and the damages that might be owed to the people injured and the families of those who died. An experienced personal injury attorney may be able to evaluate the details of the police investigation in order to discern a clearer picture of the events that transpired.

Teen drivers in Tennessee should take precautions in summer

According to a news release from the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and AAA as well as statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, summer is the most dangerous time of the year for a teen driver in Tennessee or any other state to be in an automobile accident. The main reason is distracted driving: Teens are involved in more accidents involving injuries and death between Memorial Day and Labor Day than any other period.

According to the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, approximately 11 percent of drivers under the age of 20 were involved in a crash related to some distraction, such as texting. Like many other states, Tennessee bans all cell phone use for novice drivers and texting for all drivers in the state. Even just reaching for something inside the car while driving can significantly increase the odds of having an accident.

The Decide to Drive campaign, partially sponsored by AAA, is one of several efforts to curb distracted teen driving. The campaign includes a “wreck-less checklist” that includes reminders for teen drivers before getting behind the wheel. The checklist includes reminders to adjust mirrors, wear appropriate Bluetooth earpieces, pre-load mp3 playlists and put on a seat belt prior to starting up the car.

The campaign also reminds drivers to pull over if they are distracted for any reason. Victims receiving a personal injury as a result of a distracted driver may have a case against the negligent driver if it is proven that he or she was distracted at the time of the accident. A car accident victim in Tennessee may seek compensation for trauma, medical bills and other expenses related to reckless or distracted driving.

Car collision with bus leaves as many as eight injured

A car and a CARTA bus reportedly collided at the intersection of Carter and Main St. in Tennessee, leaving eight people potentially injured. An eyewitness reported that the car accident occurred as a result of the car not stopping appropriately at the intersection.

The eyewitness stated that he saw the car fail to stop at a stop sign. The bus was approaching the intersection at the same time and allegedly hit the car twice. The eyewitness further stated that he had medical training and assisted the passengers of both the car and the bus following the collision. The bus reportedly went out of control and through a fence to finally stop on a patch of grass.

Both the driver and the passenger in the car were taken away for medical treatment, and six of the passengers within the bus were also taken to the hospital. One of the passengers in the car is reported to be in serious condition, but the bus passengers were listed with non-life-threatening injuries.

It is not known whether charges are going to be filed against either driver, and it is possible that the investigation is still ongoing. However, if the driver did fail to stop at the stop sign, he may be found negligent and responsible for the injuries to the six bus passengers as well as the passenger in his car. If found negligent in the accident, the car driver may find himself responsible for the medical costs of those injured within the crash along with any property damage and any other applicable compensation necessary. A motor vehicle accident attorney may be able to reduce the damage claims by either constructing a reasonable defense or making sure that all the claims against the driver are valid.

Tennessee woman arrested after a car accident

A 30-year-old woman has been arrested near Kingston after reportedly causing a multiple vehicle accident on Highway 58. The Tennessee Highway Patrol states that she was driving under the influence of alcohol and has charged her with DUI. After the car accident, both she and a 44-year-old male driver who was seriously injured were transported to the University of Tennessee Medical Center.

According to WBIR News, the woman was driving along the highway when she crashed her vehicle into two others and then collided head-on with a Toyota Camry. Her vehicle sped off the highway and flipped upside down before stopping in a nearby yard. In addition to DUI, she has been charged with driving under a suspended license and reckless endangerment.

Sadly, the injured victim’s predicament is far from uncommon. Thousands of motorists are injured by negligent drivers every year, often experiencing deep physical and emotional suffering as a result. When someone is injured in a motor vehicle accident, the consequences can be devastating and long-term. Extended hospitalization and subsequent rehabilitative therapy are prohibitively expensive for many families, and some people simply cannot afford the lost wages and income such circumstances oblige. If the injury is serious enough, the victim may not be able to return to work at all.

In addition to the criminal charges against her, the woman in this case may also be exposed to a civil claim by the victim and his family. In order to determine full culpability, it is often necessary to thoroughly investigate the scene of the accident. Experienced car accident attorneys can interview any available witnesses and inspect the damage to all involve vehicles to corroborate their testimonies with physical evidence. Furthermore, an attorney can review the individual circumstances of all injured parties to help ensure the equitable distribution of any financial compensation to which they may be entitled.

Motorcycle accident kills one man and injures his wife

A Tennessee man has died after a sports utility vehicle turned into the path of a motorcycle, which resulted in a collision. The man’s wife, who was riding as a passenger, was also injured in the motorcycle accident.

Both individuals were taken by ambulance to the University of Tennessee Medical Center, where the man died due to his injuries. The wife’s injuries were not life-threatening. The driver of the SUV was not injured in the accident. The investigation into the collision is still ongoing, but alcohol is not suspected to be a factor.

In Knoxville, motorcycles are quickly becoming a primary mode of transportation. This has resulted in an increased number of accidents involving motorcycles. Motorcyclists often sustain severe injuries when these accidents occur, including serious head injuries, broken bones, road rash and spinal cord injuries. These injuries are often far more severe than any injuries sustained by the driver of the motor vehicle.

Most of these accidents occur when the motorcycle is in the driver’s blind spot. It is the responsibility of the driver to ensure that it is safe to change lanes. If a driver does not see a motorcycle, any accident that occurs could result in a motorcyclist being injured or killed.

If an accident does occur that results in any serious injuries, wrongful deaths or damage to property, a Knoxville motorcycle accident lawyer may be able to help. An experienced attorney may be able to represent the rights of those injured in motorcycle accidents and ensure that their clients receive the compensation that they deserve. The attorney might also handle any wrongful death suits on the behalf of clients who have lost loved ones in these serious accidents.
